We’ve officially reached the halfway point of the inaugural season of the Unrivaled and the excitement is only intensifying! 4 weeks in, the league is keeping the anticipation alive with the thrilling 1 vs 1 tournament. Breanna Stewart would stumble on day 1, Sharika Austin stunned, and we had 8 of 16 moving to round 2. You’d think the intensity would carry a heavy atmosphere, but the stars are as joyous as they come.
Caitlin Clark might not be playing, but the Indiana Fever still has a strong presence! Lexie Hull has joined forces with Angel Reese at Rose BC, while Aliyah Boston is bringing her dominant game to the court alongside Arike Ogunbowale at Vinyl BC. While the 1 vs 1 tournament, however, did not turn out to be their shining moment, Hull had more than a few talking post her game; thanks in part to the Chi-Town Barbie.
In a matchup between Lexie Hull and Rhyne Howard, the Atlanta Dream guard, with a defensive effort of 2 blocks and 12 rebounds, managed to overpower 12-7. But the real highlight of the night was Hull’s walkout song “Set It Off” by rapper Boosie Badazz. The opening lines of the song have the rapper saying he is going to put people in the trash cans. Of course, the internet had a field day with it; wasn’t long before W stars caught wind.
Currently playing out for Mist BC, DiJonai Carrington took to X to share the hilarious moment, “Y’all, we got to pick a walkout song for the 1v1. Why did @lexiehulll just walk out to Boosie—‘Set It Off’ 😭😭😭😭😭😭 I love her 😂😂😂.” Turns out, Angel Reese was the mastermind behind the bold song choice, quickly taking credit for the song. “yup! and you know who chose that for her🤣😭” she had replied.
Carrington couldn’t help but laugh, firing back with, “Plssss Angel 😂😂😂😂 y’all ain’t no good for her 💀💀”.
Teasingly calling Reese out, Carrington made it clear that she thinks Hull was set up for the ultimate comedic entrance. But in all honesty, that’s the energy Lexie Hull brings. Her Rose BC teammate, Khaleah Copper would describe it the best, picking the Fever star as her favorite on the roster. “She comes in every day, smile on her face, no complaints,” the Pheonix Mercury star shares. And its been all love and cheer in the Rose BC.
Reese has constantly hyped Hull, from right before the season’s beginning– in practice sessions and on photoshoots. There’s camaraderie here and the players aren’t letting speculations taint it.
Lexie Hull is averaging 6.1 points, 2.3 rebounds, and 1.7 assists. But as Copper notes, it isn’t all reflected on the stat sheet. “I don’t know if there’s anybody who can bring what she brings every night,” she adds. Now while that would have us missing the Clark-Hull duo a little, we are glad the 2024 ROTY is occupied with the ways she has chosen.
While she’s been spotted courtside at games, attending award shows, hitting the golf course, and even getting her iconic Iowa jersey retired, Clark has also been busy giving back to the community. Through the Caitlin Clark Foundation, the Fever star is making a real difference for young people.
Partnering with Scholastic’s national literacy program for her 23rd birthday, the Caitlin Clark Foundation donated a staggering 22,000 books to schools in Iowa and Indiana that desperately needed resources.
“I remember picking out the books from the Scholastic flyer and how empowering that was for me as a child, and how motivated I was to read. I want to help kids have the same experience, to develop their reading skills and open their imaginations to dream big,” she had said in a statement.
She certainly wasn’t done!
When Iowa announced it would retire Caitlin Clark’s jersey, through the Caitlin Clark Foundation, she awarded four massive $22,000 grants to local Iowa charities that played a key role in her journey. The University of Iowa Children’s Hospital, Coralville Community Food Pantry, Boys and Girls Club of the Corridor, and Special Olympics Iowa-East Central all received support!
Sometimes the most memorable victories happen off the court and Hull and Clark seem to providing examples.
